What does it mean to be different? I’ve always felt I was not only different but more different than the average person. That used to be, when I was younger, the main thing i didn’t like about myself. Now, at 62 years of age, i actually love the feeling of being different! For me now, I see that the more different I am the more I am actually living “my life!” Earlier in my life when I was trying to fit in and be more like other people, I didn’t realize that what I was really doing was trying to live others lives. To be somewhat fake and dishonest.
I’m writing this because much time has passed but in many ways, we are not “growing” as a culture because I look around and see many people making negative comments about others seemingly only because they talk or act differently. Have we learned nothing? To do that we would have to look back and understand what we did wrong and learn why it was wrong and work to try and change it and then pass on those lessons to others.
It appears to me that that learning does take place somewhat but mainly for the individual and not so much for “groups!” When I talk with someone that i know well but they are now in some group, they appear to be a different type of person. They are much more eager to talk bad about someone if they are in a group! This can be pretty much any kind of group, political or something else. They speak, many times, as though they are worried about what others will think, but when I speak to them one to one, they are very clear about their thoughts on a subject. I suppose that’s partly why I really enjoy discussing something with an individual and one to one! I also suppose that’s at least partly the reason I only train folks one to one. When I do that they seem to learn things much better and are more clear about how to perform a certain exercise or whatever and after all, that is my goal and usually theirs as well.
So I’ll just end these “thoughts” with a question to the reader, how do you like to communicate ideas or learn new things like exercises, in a group or one to one? Also, why do you think you feel that way? Is it the way you learned growing up or something else altogether? Do you believe that your choice is working for you?
