Humans (Homo sapiens) are primates, belonging to the family of great apes (Hominidae) along with chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans, sharing a common ancestor with chimpanzees and bonobos from about 6 million years ago. As primates, humans are characterized by traits like social behavior, intelligence, and adept use of hands, but are distinguished by bipedalism, large brains, and complex language, making them the only surviving species of the human lineage (hominins).
