The lion (Panthera leo) is a large, powerful cat known as the “king of beasts,” famous for the male’s prominent mane, and is the only social big cat, living in groups called prides. Found in African grasslands and scrublands, with a small population in India, lions are apex predators that hunt large ungulates like zebras and wildebeest, playing a crucial role in their ecosystems. They are characterized by their muscular build, tawny coat, and a tufted tail, and are active at night or twilight, though they can adapt to being more diurnal when not persecuted.
